Alligator Farm, St. Augustine and Jacksonville Zoo

May 1 - May 2

May1 and 2 Tuesday and Wednesday -Alligator Farm, St. Augustine and Jacksonville Zoo, Florida-
We will assemble at Lowes to form up carpools at 8am and arrive at the zoo by 10:30. This 110 acre Zoo and Botanic Garden, along the Trout River, is celebrating its 103th anniversary this year. The 2000 rare and exotic animals and birds as well as the 1500 plant species in the gardens are favorites of photographers. Both the zoo and gardens have won numerous awards stemming from their major renovation which has extended over the past 20 years. Wikipedia has an excellent detailed description of elements of the zoo and gardens.
Admission is $18 for adults and $16 for seniors 65 and older. A 10% discount is available with proof that you are a member of AAA. Parking is free. We will be eating in their main restaurant which has a southwestern menu with nachos, burritos, tacos, sandwiches and salads. A typical meal is about $10. We will depart at 2:30 and head for St. Augustine to tour the historic city before checking in at the hotel Historic St. Augustine offers many opportunities for photos of houses and shops along St. George St. as well as the Castillo De San Marcos historic fort and the St. Augustine Lighthouse. We will eat dinner at Caps on the Water for delicious sea food. Hotel reservations will be made as the time of the trip approaches
The next morning, we will arrive at the Alligator farm at 9 am. For those who have not visited The Alligator Farm rookery during the nesting season, this is a unique opportunity to photograph Egrets, Herons, Spoonbills and other birds in dozens of nests. There are hundreds of alligators as well. The accessible boardwalks place the photographer within 10-50’ of the nests of chicks being tended to by the adults. A 70-200 mm lens is perfect for this and tripods are welcome. There is also a zoo as part of the farm with rare birds and reptiles that are very photogenic. The entrance fee is $24. We will leave after lunch at the farm and arrive home by 6pm.
