Hilton Head History Day

October 14- Hilton Head History Day- Saturday- 10-4pm- This annual event celebrates 15 historical sites here on HHI. Buses depart from Honey Horn to transport visitors to the various sites. This is the best opportunity to photograph these sites which are an important part of the CCHHI Sense of Place exhibit at the Coastal discovery Museum next May and June. This is not an organized trip as you will be on your own.

Hilton Head Cup Sailing Regatta

October 15- Sunday- The Hilton Head Cup Sailing Regatta on Calibogue Sound aboard the Island Queen. This is an excellent boat for photographers in that we can walk around to get the best shots. This annual event is hosted by the Hilton Head Yacht Club and provides a great opportunity to photograph larger boats than are normally seen racing in the sound. The races last from 12-3. November 2- Harbour Island- Thursday, - Piping Plovers, 9:30-4- We will visit this gated community as guests of John Albert who will guide us to view the birds of the fall migration on the beach. According to John, the best time to see the birds is one hour either side of high tide which is at 11:30. We will leave Lowes for the 1 hour trip at 9:30 to arrive by 10:30. Reconstruction Era National Monument

December 5-Tuesday - Reconstruction Era National Monument - This National Monument was established in January of this year to tell the story of reconstruction from 1861 to the 1890’s after the Civil War. We will visit the three sites recognized along with other attractions along the way in Port Royal and St. Helena Island. January 25-Thursday- Marine Air Station, Beaufort , We will go behind the scenes at the air base to see a demonstration of the capabilities of their guard dogs, visit the hangar where they will be servicing the aircraft and have lunch at the officers club. February 3-Saturday-Freedom Day- Mitchelville- National Freedom Day has been celebrated in the United States since Congress established it in 1948. It is set on February 1 which was the day that President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution that ended slavery. Mitchelville celebrates this on the following Saturday with tours and entertainment from 10-2. This provides the opportunity to photograph people in period costume. April 30- May 1 Monday Tuesday -Alligator Farm, St. Augustine and Jacksonville Zoo, Florida- We will assemble at Lowes to form up carpools at 8am and arrive at the zoo by 10:30. This 110 acre Zoo and Botanic Garden, along the Trout River, is celebrating its 103th anniversary this year. Hunting Island State Park

May 16-Wednesday- Hunting Island State Park- We will visit the hopefully restored park which was damaged so heavily by Mathew. We will see the bone yard of dead trees on the beach, the historic light house and the marshlands. We will eat lunch at the Johnson Creek Tavern overlooking the creek at 2141 Sea Island Parkway. We will leave Lowes at 8:30 and return by 3. The entry fee is $5 for adults and $3.25 for SC seniors.

Congaree National Park and Columbia Riverbanks Zoo

Late May-Congaree National Park and Columbia Zoo- The 26,000 acre park is known for its 90 species of trees such as the Bald Cypress (10 foot high knees), Loblolly Pines (Americas largest at 170’) elms, hickories, maples and oaks. All of this is best seen from the 21/2 mile boardwalk. The colorful 5”wide Golden silk orb weaver spider can also be seen form the boardwalk.
