Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island Light Museum

December 4 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

We will visit three sites on Tybee and Cockspur Islands on Monday, December 4. Following the War of 1812, construction of Fort Pulaski to protect the port of Savannah was completed in 1833. In 1862 during the Civil War the Union Army successfully tested a rifled-cannon against the fort which rendered brick fortifications obsolete. Reconstruction Era National Monument -CANCELLED

Marine Air Station, Beaufort

January 23-Thursday- Marine Air Station, Beaufort- We will go behind the scenes at the air base to see a demonstration of the capabilities of their guard dogs, visit the hangar where they will be servicing the aircraft and go up into the control tower. February 3-Saturday-Freedom Day- Mitchelville- National Freedom Day has been celebrated in the United States since Congress established it in 1948. It is set on February 1 which was the day that President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution that ended slavery. February 13th- Georgia State Railroad Museum. We leave Lowes in carpools at 8:30 and travel to Savannah for a 2 hour “back stage” tour of the Georgia State Railroad Museum at 303 Martin Luther King Blvd. 912-651-6840. Hunting Island State Park

May 16-Wednesday- Hunting Island State Park- We will visit the hopefully restored park which was damaged so heavily by Mathew. We will see the bone yard of dead trees on the beach, the historic light house and the marshlands. We will eat lunch at the Johnson Creek Tavern overlooking the creek at 2141 Sea Island Parkway. We will leave Lowes at 8:30 and return by 3. The entry fee is $5 for adults and $3.25 for SC seniors.

Congaree National Park and Columbia Riverbanks Zoo

Late May-Congaree National Park and Columbia Zoo- The 26,000 acre park is known for its 90 species of trees such as the Bald Cypress (10 foot high knees), Loblolly Pines (Americas largest at 170’) elms, hickories, maples and oaks.
